Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Raphael Warnock (R-GA) announced today more than $25 million in Federal funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to upgrade commercial vehicle infrastructure in Monroe County and Garden City.

Where does this funding come from? The Federal funding was delivered through the Department of Transportation's (DOT) INFRA Grant program (Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program).

The funding will help build a public parking facility for commercial vehicle spaces for the Port of Savannah and create new truck parking spaces within Monroe County’s Weigh Station #6 and Rest Area #22 on Interstate 75 Southbound.

What key figures had to say:

  • Sen. Jon Ossoff: “Georgians deserve world-class infrastructure. Senator Reverend Warnock and I are delivering these resources to strengthen our economy and upgrade our shipping and logistics infrastructure. Our bipartisan infrastructure law will continue to deliver long-overdue upgrades to Georgia’s infrastructure for years to come.”
  • Sen. Raphael Warnock: “Senator Ossoff and I have worked tirelessly to secure the federal investments needed to strengthen Georgia’s infrastructure and bolster our state’s growing economy. This latest investment will support the hardworking Georgians who keep goods moving across our state and strengthen the supply chains that Georgia businesses rely on. I will continue working alongside Senator Ossoff and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver more investments that expand economic opportunity for Georgians in every corner of our state.”

What else came from the IIJA? The IIJA was a landmark legislative package signed into law in November 2021 and represented one of the most substantial federal investments in the nation’s core infrastructure.

The bill provided $1.2 trillion in total funding, with about $550 million in new investments directed toward repairing and mondernizing public infrastructure.

What about the DOT’s INFRA Grant Program? This program is a competitive federal grant program that funds transformational infrastructure projects like highway interchanges and port facilities.

The program was originally established by Congress under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act in 2015 which was expanded by the IIJA.
