Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) endorsed billionaire outsider Rick Jackson for Governor of Georgia just days ahead of the June 16th runoff election.
What does this endorsement mean for the Jackson Campaign? This endorsement gives the Jackson Campaign a boost as early voting closes and Georgia Republicans prepare to nominate their candidate for the general election.
What Sen. Ted Cruz had to say:
- “I am proud to endorse Rick Jackson for Governor of Georgia. Rick’s story is a testament to the American Dream. Raised in the foster care system, he overcame adversity through hard work, determination, and faith to build a successful business that employs thousands of Georgians.”
- “Rick understands firsthand the challenges facing working families, and he knows that freedom and opportunity, not bigger government, are the keys to prosperity. As Governor, he will cut taxes, lower costs, create jobs, and fight for conservative principles.”
- “Georgia needs a proven fighter, and Rick is exactly that leader. I am proud to support him and look forward to his victory.”
- “I’m supporting Rick because I think he’s the strongest conservative who can win in November, and we need to win in November.”
Context: This endorsement also bolsters the legitimacy of Jackson’s candidacy, which has been framed from the outset as that of an outsider. It tells voters that although Jackson has no identifiable political record, he can be trusted with the governorship.
This is the second endorsement of its type for Jackson, with the first coming from Senator Rick Scott (R-FL). When Sen. Scott endorsed Jackson, he called him a ‘longtime friend’ and drew a parallel to his own candidacy for the Florida governorship in 2010.
Attorney General Chris Carr also endorsed the outsider candidate just one week after the primary election. AG Carr expressed pride in being able to support Jackson and sees him as the best candidate to follow up on Governor Brian Kemp’s (R-GA) success.
