Stacey Abrams’ (D) voter registration group is set to shut down after a series of controversies and financial scrutiny. The group is called the New Georgia Project, and it was founded in 2013 to register and mobilize voters across the State of Georgia.

The group’s financial extension, the New Georgia Project Action Fund, is also shutting down but few details have been revealed as to why.

However, it is reported that the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission levied a $300,000 fine against the group, finding it violated state campaign finance laws.

The New Georgia Project was a non-governmental organization with a clear mission to encourage Black Georgians, Brown Georgians, young people, LGBTQ+ individuals, rural Georgians, and others to register to vote and participate in the democratic process.

The group’s focus was explicitly on marginalized communities; their website states, “we are leading a state-wide, multi-racial, multi-generational, cross-class movement that works all year, every year to build a new Georgia that works for everyone.”

Now that the group is shutting down, it’s unclear who will answer for its role. Abrams will likely cut her losses and move on to her next project, but it’s also likely that another notable Georgia Democrat will attempt to start something familiar.

The group’s main competitor, Greater Georgia, commented on its failure and accused it of spreading false narratives and engaging in criminal campaign activity.

Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler (R) is the founder of Greater Georgia, and she commented on the New Georgia Project’s alleged history of illegal activity and Marxist ideology on social media.
