Over the past few days, the law enforcement community has endured a great deal of hardship. First, a Lieutenant of South Fulton Police Department named Helio Garcia passed away after a car crash. Second, two officer-involved shootings have left two officers critically injured.
Governor Brian Kemp has made sure to comment on all of these incidents. He has expressed his unwavering support for law enforcement and mourning for the incidents.
Kemp first responded to the story of Lt. Helio Garcia’s tragic death. The officer passed away after a head-on collision while he was on duty.
Kemp stated, “Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by the tragic loss of (South Fulton Police Department) Lt. Helio Garcia. As we keep his loved ones, fellow law enforcement, and the entire South Fulton community in our thoughts and prayers, we ask that all Georgians join us in lifting them up as they grieve.”
Next, Kemp commented on an officer-involved shooting in Paulding County. A twenty-four year old deputy named Brian Mattick was shot in the shoulder during a welfare check. The suspect later died from his injuries while the officer recovered.
Kemp commented, “Marty, the girls and I ask all Georgians to join us in keeping this Deputy, their family, and the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts and prayers. We cannot ever forget the daily sacrifices and dangers law enforcement endure to keep our communities safe.”
Finally, Kemp responded to an officer-involved shooting on Fulton Industrial Boulevard. In this incident, an officer named Lt. Charles Cook was shot exiting his vehicle. This occurred after he pulled over to assist a traffic stop and was sent to Grady hospital in critical condition.
In an official statement, Kemp stated, “In just a matter of days, this lone police department has demonstrated multiple times that law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve their fellow Georgians. All those who wear a badge and uniform deserve our unfailing gratitude and prayers.”
