Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) recently announced that more than $26 million in federal funding has been secured for Georgia to support the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, as well as a transportation project in Cobb County.

Where does this funding come from? This funding originates from the Department of Transportation as part of major federal infrastructure programs implemented by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

Also known as House Resolution 3684, the IIJA is the largest federal investment in public transit, clean water, and broadband in decades. The total package amounts to $1.2 trillion over ten years, with 60% sent directly to the states, which maintain discretion over local projects.

What lawmakers are saying:

  • Sen. Raphael Warnock: “I’m focused on securing federal funding for Georgia to keep our supply chains running smoothly and our communities better connected. This is the kind of progress I had in mind when I worked with my colleagues in the Senate to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. I will continue to work to deliver more investments in our transportation economy for Georgians across the state.”
  • Sen. Jon Ossoff: “Georgians deserve world-class infrastructure. Bringing Republicans and Democrats together, we’re delivering these resources to upgrade infrastructure across metro Atlanta and coastal Georgia to keep families safe, support business and commerce, and keep our state moving.”

Further Context: For the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, $20,972,248 has been allocated to install fiber connections for connected vehicles across the freight areas of both ports.

The project includes the installation of 58 miles of conduit and fiber-optic communication, and the equipping of approximately 500 freight vehicles with on-board units to improve the efficiency of freight operations.

In Cobb County, $5 million was secured to help realign Cobb Parkway at McCollum Parkway.

Specifically, the funding will be used to support study and design activities for roadway realignments.

The realignments are necessary to correct multiple turning movements on McCollum Parkway, Old 41 Highway, South Main Street, and Summers Street by aligning with Cobb Parkway/US 41 at its intersection with Kennesaw Due West Road.
