Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J. Harper recently announced the arrest of suspect Robert James Hester, following a joint investigation by the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division (GDA-LE), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, and Peach County SWAT.
What was the point of the investigation? The investigation initially concerned reports of alleged illegal dog fighting activity and resulted in the execution of state and federal search warrants on June 24, 2026.
This led to the seizure of 23 dogs believed to have been used for fighting, as well as the confiscation of multiple firearms, suspected marijuana, and suspected methamphetamine.
What Commissioner Tyler J. Harper had to say:
- “The Georgia Department of Agriculture has zero tolerance for illegal dog fighting and the cruelty it inflicts on animals. This investigation not only led to the rescue of 23 dogs believed to have been used for fighting, but also uncovered multiple firearms and suspected narcotics."
- “We remain committed to working alongside our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to investigate these crimes, protect animal welfare, and hold those who violate the law accountable. I want to thank each of our law enforcement partners for their coordinated efforts and unwavering commitment to protecting Georgians.”
Further Context: Hester has been charged with possession of firearms by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, and possession of methamphetamine.
In addition to the state charges, Hester faces federal charges related to alleged illegal dog fighting and firearms violations. He remains in the Crawford County Jail without bond.
Thanks to the work of our @GaDeptAg Law Enforcement Division and our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, 23 dogs were rescued and multiple firearms and suspected narcotics were seized during a joint operation in Crawford County.
