Representatives Rich McCormick (R-GA) and Brian Babin (R-TX) recently sent letters to three major department heads requesting information on how their agencies are advancing U.S. leadership in biotechnology research while protecting against security risks.
Who received these letters, and how were they sent? The major department heads include U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Chris Wright, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, and National Science Foundation (NSF) Acting Director Brian Stone.
Rep. Babin filed his inquiries as the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman. Rep. McCormick filed his inquiries as the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman.
What did the Chairmen have to say in these letters? In the letters, the Chairmen highlighted biotechnology's growing importance to U.S. economic competitiveness, scientific leadership, national security, healthcare, agriculture, energy, and manufacturing.
They also emphasized that rapid advances in biotechnology present significant opportunities and emerging security risks.
These advances include synthetic biology, gene editing, DNA synthesis, automated laboratory technologies, and the convergence of biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

- any significant gaps, vulnerabilities, or emerging threats related to biotechnology;
- explain whether they have implemented recommendations from the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology;

The letters are meant to underscore the Committee's interest in ensuring that the U.S. remains a leader in biotechnology research and innovation while maintaining appropriate safeguards against the misuse of emerging biological capabilities.
