Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J Harper signed a proclamation designating August 3–9, 2026, as “Georgia Farmers Market Week” in recognition of National Farmers Market Week.
This week also marks the important role that farmers markets play in supporting Georgia farmers, consumers, and local communities.
What does Georgia’s Farmers Market sector look like? Georgia is home to a network of nine State Markets that provide fresh fruits and vegetables throughout Georgia and the Southeast, supporting more than $1 billion in sales each year.
In addition, the Georgia Grown Map features more than 50 Georgia Grown-certified markets and farm retail locations across the state, making it easier for consumers to find local products close to home.
What Commissioner Harper had to say:
- “Farmers markets connect Georgians directly with the farmers and producers who grow the food we put on our tables. When you buy local, you support Georgia farm families, strengthen our food supply chain, and help keep dollars in your community. I encourage all Georgians to visit a local farmers market this week, buy Georgia Grown, and support the hardworking men and women who keep our state fed.”
Further Context: From fresh fruits and vegetables to meats, honey, dairy, nursery products, and other Georgia Grown goods, farmers’ markets provide a direct connection between Georgia consumers and the farmers who fuel our state’s agricultural economy.
In Commissioner Harper's declaration, he credited these markets for allowing farmers and small agribusiness to sell straight to consumers, which goes a long way in strengthening local economies and communities.
He also credited them for serving as places of community, education, and connection as they help Georgians better understand where their food comes from and the people who produce it.
