Former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams issued a lengthy statement, responding to the recent subpoena issued by the Georgia Senate Special Committee on Investigations, calling it ‘performative’ and a ‘sham.’

Abrams was subpoenaed as part of the Special Committee’s ongoing investigation into campaign finance law violations connected to the New Georgia Project and its affiliated entities.

According to Abrams, the hearing scheduled for May 15th at 10:00 a.m. is highly partisan and only serves to intimidate and disarm voting rights advocates across Georgia.

Abrams stated that she agreed to attend the hearing but sees only hollow, cynical intent behind the investigation.

This subpoena comes two weeks after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which overruled the state’s congressional map. According to Abrams, this is no coincidence, asserting the idea that Georgia is intent on marginalizing minority voters.

The former candidate proclaimed her innocence and denied the investigation's legitimacy.

“Let me be clear from the start. They know I have done nothing wrong, but this is not a search for truth,” Abrams stated. “It is a desperate distraction from the ongoing erosion of democracy at the hands of partisan state leaders.”

She concluded, "Georgia deserves better. Our democracy demands better. As I ever have, I intend to keep working to make sure it delivers for Georgians."

Lt. Gov. Jones Responds

Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R-GA) backed the committee, stating that its work is necessary to ensure that powerful political organizations are held to the same legal standards as every Georgian.

“No one is above the law in Georgia,” said Lt. Gov. Jones. “When organizations secretly spend millions to influence elections while evading disclosure requirements, it undermines confidence in our democratic process. The Senate will continue pursuing the truth and ensuring accountability, regardless of political party or influence.”
