Former President Joe Biden recently endorsed former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia's gubernatorial race, saying he has known Lance Bottoms for a long time and "she's something special," before praising her work as mayor of Georgia's capital city.

"Keisha faced every challenge a leader could face and then some," President Biden said in an endorsement video. "She handled it all with steady, thoughtful leadership."

After declining to run for a second term as Atlanta's mayor, Lance Bottoms joined the Biden administration in 2022 as a senior advisor to the president. Biden called Lance Bottoms an invaluable part of his team.

"I'm proud to be in her corner, just like she was in mine," he said in the endorsement video. "Keisha Lannce Bottoms for governor, now."

Recent polls show Lance Bottoms is the frontrunner in the Democratic primary set for May 19.

A late-April poll sponsored by The Atlanta-Journal Constitution places Lance Bottoms a full 29 percentage points above the next candidate, holding 39% of the vote.

A candidate must receive at least 50% of the vote in the primary to win outright and stop a runoff. With several viable candidates in the race, a runoff is still possible despite Lance Bottoms' significant lead in the polls.

Although Lance Bottoms has maintained a strong lead in the Democratic primary since the start, other candidates like former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan and state Representative Michael Thurmond could still trigger a runoff.

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution poll shows Rep. Thurmond holding 10% of the vote with former Senator Jason Esteves and Duncan holding 8% and 7%, respectively.

However, around 35% of primary voters are still undecided.

However, this endorsement could push Lance Bottoms over the 50% threshold.
