Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has come out against Republicans for voting to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) without implementing warrant requirements.

The former congresswoman lamented the fact that only about ten Republicans are refusing to go along with the vote. She criticized the rest for voting to give the government the ‘ability to spy’ on its citizens without acquiring a warrant.

For context, Congress enacted FISA in 1978, and it provides a statutory framework for government agencies seeking authorization for how they gather foreign intelligence. This framework primarily concerns intelligence gathering through electronic surveillance, physical searches, pen registers, trap-and-trace devices, or the production of certain business records.

President Trump's History with FISA

Greene’s statement comes after President Trump’s decision to sign a short-term extension of FISA’s controversial Section 702 program through April 30, 2026. Section 702 grants intelligence agencies the right to collect information on American citizens in the process of surveying foreign entities.

As Greene points out in her statement, it is especially odd for President Trump to push for the extension of this program. He previously called for FISA to be ‘killed’ and claimed repeatedly that it was used to spy on his presidential campaign in 2016.

Despite the initial opposition, the President appears to have changed his tune on FISA.

In a lengthy Truth Social post, he wrote, "While parts of FISA were illegally and unfortunately used against me in the Democrats’ disgraceful Witch Hunt ... I am willing to risk that as a Citizen in order to do what is right for our Country."

Greene called this change in stance a betrayal and openly wondered how Republicans can face their constituents after going along with it.
