Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) filed a War Powers Resolution on the floor of the Senate to force a vote to stop President Trump’s war against Iran.
During press conference at the U.S. Capitol, Sen. Warnock stated that “Donald Trump said that he was the candidate for peace. He is a warmonger president." “He has dragged us into this illegal, unwise war right on the heels of 20 years and more, in which the American people saw that in the Middle East, it’s easy to get into these wars; it’s difficult to get out,” he added.
In his remarks, the Senator criticized the President for being ‘unhinged’ and accused him of acting without a consistent strategy.
He stated, “He is failing. He is throwing things, hoping that they will stick. The next day, after declaring that he would drop these bombs, he said that a whole civilization will die tonight. He is unhinged.”
The Senator concluded with a call for Republicans to stand with Democrats on this issue.
“The Constitution is clear. The declaration of war belongs to Congress and not to the President, and we are calling on our Republican colleagues to stand up and do their job,” Sen. Warnock concluded. “The American people are clear. They do not want this war, and it’s up to us to hold this unhinged, unaccountable President accountable.”
Further Context
Sen. Warnock has been a fierce opponent of the Trump administration’s decision to deploy U.S. military forces in Iran since the war began in February.
Following a deadly U.S. Tomahawk missile strike on an Iranian elementary school that killed at least 175 people, Sen. Warnock also sent a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-MS).
In the letter, he requested information on who was responsible, how the target was selected, and what processes are being developed to ensure similar tragedies are not repeated in the future.
I will be forcing a vote on my War Powers resolution to stop this illegal and unjust war in Iran.
Something as serious as war deserves a debate and deserves a vote.
The American people do not want this war, and I intend to hold this unhinged President accountable.
