Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R-GA) has announced a new top priority for the 2026 Legislative Session – reaffirming his commitment to empowering parents and expanding educational opportunity for students.

“Every Georgia parent deserves the freedom to choose the educational environment that best meets their child’s unique needs,” said Lt. Gov. Jones. “As Lieutenant Governor, I have fought to put parents back in the driver’s seat of their children’s education, and we delivered.”

Jones’s mission includes ensuring every Georgia child has access to a high-quality education, regardless of their ZIP code, with Senate Bill (SB) 446

SB 446

This bill directs the Department of Revenue to maintain Georgia’s permanent participation in the federal tax credit program for scholarship-granting organizations, which Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) recently opted the state into via executive order.

The federal tax credit program, made possible by the One Big, Beautiful Bill, provides up to $1,700 for individuals who donate to scholarship programs. These programs will then offer scholarships for both private and public schools.

Sponsored by State Senator Clint Dixon (R-Gwinnett), SB 446 codifies the executive action enacted by Gov. Kemp and amends existing code to comply.

Jones and School Choice

Jones praised the bill and connected it to his relationship with President Donald Trump. As the President works to advance school choice nationwide, he wants to continue the effort in Georgia.

The Lt. Governor also noted why school choice is so important, explaining how it enhances student opportunity and expression. To him, it’s the main method of improving education in the country.

“School choice is about opportunity, accountability, and putting students and their unique needs first,” Jones continued. “When parents are empowered, schools improve, and children succeed. Georgia is leading the way — and we’re just getting started.”
