Representative Rich McCormick (R-GA) recently announced that he has secured $2.5 million in community project funding for the Lake Lanier Water Quality Initiative, a regional effort aimed at reducing nutrient pollution and protecting drinking water for millions of Georgians.

The project will be led by the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center in partnership with local governments and conservation districts. It will focus on reducing excess phosphorus and nitrogen entering Lake Lanier from both agricultural and urban sources.

These nutrients have contributed to harmful algal blooms and water quality challenges that threaten public health, wildlife, and the long-term reliability of the region’s water supply.

The announcement follows reports that seasonal taste and odor issues are affecting drinking water in metro Atlanta. Although the water remains safe for consumption, the underlying conditions in Lake Lanier have made regular monitoring and nutrient management crucial.

With this $2.5 million, the partnership will implement management practices, provide technical and financial assistance to landowners, enhance stormwater controls, and expand watershed monitoring to establish a long-term baseline for the lake’s health.

In a statement, Rep. Rich McCormick commented on the importance of Lake Lanier for Georgians and the methodical approach this project is set to implement.

“Lake Lanier is a lifeline for our Georgia communities,” McCormick stated. “This funding allows us to take science-driven steps to reduce nutrient pollution, support our farmers and local partners, and ensure clean drinking water for the families who rely on it every day.”

“This is a responsible investment in both our environment and our economy. Protecting Lake Lanier means protecting public health, recreation, and the future growth of our region,” he added.
