Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R) has become the only gubernatorial candidate in the race to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written commitment to Georgia taxpayers to oppose and veto any efforts to increase taxes once elected governor.
The Taxpayer Protection Pledge, championed by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), is a written promise from candidates to their constituents that they will oppose any tax increases.
The pledge was first endorsed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, and today, more than 1,400 elected officials nationwide have signed it — making it one of the most recognized commitments to fiscal responsibility in American politics.
Jones commented on the significance of this commitment and the fact that he is the only candidate to have signed it.
“Georgia families are feeling the squeeze of rising costs, and they deserve a governor who will fight to let them keep more of what they earn,” Jones stated. “I’m proud to be the only candidate in this race to make this commitment — and as governor, I’ll continue leading the charge to eliminate Georgia’s state income tax and make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
Grover Norquist, president of the ATR, commended Jones for taking this pledge and cementing his commitment to Georgia taxpayers.
“Georgia voters can trust that Lieutenant Governor Jones will be their ally in the governor’s mansion. By making this written commitment, he has reaffirmed that government should be reformed and take less of taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars,” Norquist stated. “Lieutenant Governor Jones has made a written commitment to Georgians to oppose any and all tax increases. Protecting taxpayers makes Georgia an even more attractive place to live, work, and raise a family.”
Today, I’ve made a promise: I will NEVER raise your taxes. I’m the only candidate in the race to have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge with @GroverNorquist & @taxreformer —my pledge to never support tax hikes.
