An officer-involved shooting took place near Augusta recently that resulted in the death of a Sheriff’s deputy. Another deputy was involved and luckily made it out of the shooting but in critical condition.
The shooting occurred as a result of a routine traffic stop. The suspect opened fire on the officers while they walked back to their patrol car.
A tense standoff ensued with multiple agencies at the suspect's motor home. The suspect was later found dead after attempting to flee.
Brandon Sikes was the name of the deputy that passed away as a result of the shooting and Columbia county is united in mourning.
Georgia lawmakers have taken to X to express their mourning and support for the community.
First, Governor Brian Kemp expressed how he and his family were praying for the deputies involved. He also commented how this serves as a reminder for why law enforcement deserves our gratitude.
Kemp stated, “As they remain in our hearts and prayers, we’re also painfully reminded of why those who wear a badge have more than earned our enduring respect and appreciation.”
Second, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones expressed how he and his family were praying for the families of those involved. He also expressed his support for the community as a whole.
Jones stated, “Our hearts are with these heroes in blue and all those who serve to keep us safe. They deserve our prayers and appreciation, along with our unwavering support.”
Attorney General Chris Carr weighed in by concurring with Kemp and Jones. Carr stated, “Anyone willing to put on the uniform every day in a job that’s not safe, with somebody waiting for them to come home at the end of the shift, deserves our unwavering support & continued appreciation.”
Finally, Senator Raphael Warnock expressed his deep sadness at the situation. He also offered prayers for everyone affected by the tragedy.
Warnock commented, “I’m praying for Deputy Sikes’ family, friends, and the entire Columbia County community as we mourn his loss. I’m also praying for Deputy Gavin White and his recovery.”
