A circuit judge based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was arrested recently for interfering in the deportation of an undocumented migrant. The judge, Hannah Dugan, was arrested by the FBI under charges of obstruction and concealment.
The arrest has come as a result of the Trump administration’s commitment to enforcing border law. The administration is making it clear with this arrest that the law will be enforced.
The message seems to be that not even a judge is immune to obstruction. It mimics messaging that came from the Biden administration when Trump was arraigned and charged. That message being, “No one is above the law.”
The arrest has lawmakers divided mostly along party lines, especially those from Georgia. Republicans largely cheer on the administration for not backing down against judges that push back.
Democrats largely criticize the administration for going too far and exceeding the limits on its power.
First, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R) applauded the arrest showing his support for the administration. He stated, “Last week, Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan shielded an illegal alien from ICE agents. Today, the FBI arrested her on charges of obstruction. THIS IS HOW IT’S DONE.”
Second, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) came out in support of the arrest. On X, she posted a collage of democratic lawmakers and influencers stating “No one is above the law.”
The caption to this post was succinct. She stated, “No one is above the law.” Greene did this as a way to frame democrats as hypocritical for being outraged at the situation.
Finally, Rep. Hank Johnson (D) came out strongly against the arrest. He criticized it as an abuse of power and a heavy-handed approach.
Johnson also warned that the justice department may continue with this approach. He described the arrest as a message sent to state judges warning them to comply.
Johnson stated, “Time after time Trump has used the justice system to reward those who he can coerce or corrupt to do his bidding, while going after those who stand opposed to him or his policies.”
