Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) released a statement denouncing Governor Brian Kemp’s (R-GA) recent call for a special legislative session to redraw Georgia’s congressional districts.
This decision from the Governor comes just weeks after the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Louisiana v. Callais, in which they ruled that two of Louisiana’s congressional districts were unconstitutional.
Essentially, the districts constituted a racial gerrymander. The central principle of this decision is that the Voting Rights Act does not require districts to be drawn around racial makeup without a compelling interest.
This has opened an opportunity for Republican states to redraw their congressional districts and severely restrict democratic influence.
Gov. Kemp initially refused the call to redraw Georgia’s districts, but it seems that he was only concerned with preventing confusion surrounding this year’s midterm elections.
As for 2028, the Governor is openly in favor of it.
Sen. Warnock's Response
Georgia Democrats denounced the Supreme Court for their decision in Louisiana v. Callais and are now turning their attention towards Gov. Kemp.
Sen. Warnock has been particularly vocal.
In an official statement, the Senator first gave his take on how Georgians are responding to the Trump Administration. He then grouped Georgia Republicans with the Administration, claiming that they are equally responsible.
He stated, “Georgians are angry about the broken promises of this President. Everything is more expensive because of an endless war and reckless tariffs. On top of that, 1.2 million Georgians saw their health care premiums double, all to fund tax cuts for billionaires.”
According to Sen. Warnock, gerrymandering the state will help Republicans escape accountability and stifle democracy.
He continued, “Now, the same people who robbed Georgians of their doctor are robbing Georgians of their voice by redrawing the lines. Republicans under the Gold Dome are using their powers, not to make life more affordable, but to escape accountability from the people.”
Sen. Warnock concluded, declaring his intention to fight this at the federal level, stating, “I will continue to lead the charge to ban gerrymandering federally, protecting our democracy once and for all.”
