In a statement to Dome Politics, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff condemned the shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday after the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) criticized his failure to do so in a press release published Monday.

Sen. Jon Ossoff's team responded to Dome Politics' comment request Monday night condemning the shooting.

"I join all Georgians and Americans in condemning this horrific attack at the White House Correspondents Dinner, and I thank the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift response," Sen. Ossoff expressed in the email statement to Dome Politics.

The condemnation comes after former President Barrack Obama was criticized for his condemnation of the shooting in an X post Sunday in which he noted that "we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night's shooting."

The suspected gunman, 31-year-old Cole Allen of California, was charged in federal court Monday with attempting to assassinate the President, among two other charges.

He left behind a written manifesto saying he was targeting the President, according to CBS News. At least one secret service member was shot, but was wearing a bulletproof vest that prevented fatal injuries.

Sen. Ossoff was among the lawmakers who voted against funding the Department of Homeland Security, which includes funding for secret service protection.

"Jon Ossoff — who voted against funding for DHS and paying Secret Service — is refusing to condemn the left-wing assassination attempt on President Trump and his administration," the NRSC press release accused. The NRSC also alleged Sen. Ossoff's "charged rhetoric" and "hatred for law enforcement" contributed to the political violence, mentioning Ossoff's previous comments about Trump being an "authoritarian."

"Jon Ossoff's reckless political rhetoric against President Trump is dangerous and it must stop," NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia said in a statement. "Defunding DHS and refusing to condemn this left-wing assassination attempt on President Trump and his administration further proves Ossoff is beholden to the radical left."

Ossoff is up for re-election this year, and will face off against the winner of the Republican primary in the Novemeber midterms.
