The race to fill the congressional seat after an unemployment fraud scandal created a vacancy ended in a runoff as none of the four candidates recieved at least 50% of the vote.

Only 3,000 voters headed to the polls to cast their choice for the seat.

Georgia House District 94 was left vacant after Democrat Karen Bennett of Stone Mountain resigned shortly before pleading guilty to unemployment fraud. Bennet was accused of fraudulently recieving $14,000 in unemployment benefits meant for people laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four Democrats faced off in a March 10 election to elect Bennett's replacement, with Dekalb County educator Venola Mason taking the lead. Mason focused her campaign primarily on strengthening the district's schools.

In a Facebook post, Bennett encouraged voters to choose Mason to replace her in the House.

Democrat Kelly Kautz trailed Mason in the election recieving about 23% of the vote, compared to Mason's 44%.

Kautz, a former Snellville mayor, vowed to invest in mental health services and address the funding crisis for services that help families.

Kautz and Bennett will face each other again in a runoff election scheduled for April 7.
