The Georgia Senate unanimously passed House Bill 1128, which requires injured police officers, or their legal guardians, to be notified if they are eligible for disability compensation, as part of the Georgia State Indemnification Fund.
The bill, which passed on March 25, 2026, would provide an application window for disability compensation from this fund for officers unable to work due to organic brain damage suffered in the line of duty.
This comes after Georgia's state disability compensation for first responders injured on the job came under scrutiny for only covering two-thirds of first responders' salaries while they recover.
Several first responders including police officers and firefighters were not able to pay their bills after suffering incapacitating injuries while serving the community. The indemnification fund has the ability to supplement this disability pay, but only if the impacted person applies.
Some first responders don't even know they are eligible, causing many to miss out on this money.
