Two candidates launched campaigns for the Georgia Supreme Court Feb. 24, aiming to deseat two justices appointed by former Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, both of whom are up for reelection.

Former Democratic state Sen. Jen Jordan and personal injury attorney Miracle Rankin announced their campaigns together outside the state Capitol.

"I believe that there are people on that court that aren't going to stand up and protect the constitutional rights of the people of this state," Jordan said in a video posted to Facebook March 2.

"The law should work for the people, not just the powerful and well-connected," Jordan wrote in a Facebook post announcing her campaign a little over a week earlier. "That's why I'm running for the Georgia Supreme Court — to be accountable to Georgians and uphold our state constitution."

Jordan is looking to replace Presiding Justice Sarah Hawkins Warren, with Rankin hoping to take Justice Charlie Bethel's seat. The nonpartisan election will take place on May 19, with the sitting justice's six-year terms officially ending on Dec. 31.

Rankin, a personal injury attorney and recipient of the National Bar Association's "Award of Achievement for Outstanding Service," said her experiences as an attorney shaped her view of the courts and their roles.

She announced her official qualification for the state Supreme Court race Friday in a Facebook post.

The court most recently faced cases involving challenges to local governments' zoning decision and caps on noneconomic damages in wrongful death lawsuits.
