Columbia County Legislative Delegation members joined State Representative Gary Richardson (R-Evans) and State Senator Lee Anderson (R-Grovetown) in applauding the Senate’s passage of House Bill 439, legislation aimed at providing homeowners with property tax relief.
In recent comments, Rep. Richardson and Sen. Anderson highlighted the significance of this legislation and its potential to bolster local economic growth. They also framed it as a necessary step in securing the ‘American Dream’ in Georgia.
“Well-managed counties, cities, and local governments that benefit from economic development activity, and those that are seeing substantial growth in their tax digest could build a homeowner’s tax relief fund should this legislation make it to the governor’s desk,” Rep. Richardson stated.
“Owning and affording a home is a major part of achieving the ‘American Dream,’” Sen. Anderson added. “It is an honor to sponsor this legislation in the Senate to allow local governments to provide additional property tax relief for homeowners.”
House Bill 439
HB 439 would authorize any local government, subject to voter approval, to establish a fund to provide direct tax credits to homeowners in the local government’s jurisdiction. If enacted, the bill would authorize the establishment of a “local homeowner’s incentive adjustment grant program” in counties and cities across Georgia.
The bill also aims to restructure the tax deductions available to businesses responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax to the state when they file tax returns on time.
It modifies the percentage-based compensation that they receive for the administration costs of tax collection.
Now, the legislation is waiting on an affirmative vote from the Georgia House of Representatives in the remaining days of the 2026 legislative session.
The Columbia County Legislative Delegation consists of Representatives Rob Clifton (R-Evans), Rob Leverett (R-Elberton), Mark Newton (R-Augusta), Gary Richardson (R-Evans), and Senators Lee Anderson (R-Grovetown) and Max Burns (R-Sylvania).
