Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R-GA) has come out in full support of the Georgia House of Representatives and their passage of Senate Bill (SB) 523 with a unanimous, bipartisan vote tackling antisemitism.
Earlier this morning, the Lt. Governor was joined at the Capitol by former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer to discuss the bill and other measures the Georgia Senate is taking to address anti-Semitism.
Lt. Gov. Jones first thanked the Georgia House for taking action on the Senate priority and reaffirmed his commitment to Georgia’s Jewish community. He denounced the recent wave of antisemitism seen on university campuses and other communities.
“Today and every day, I stand with Georgia’s Jewish Community and any students who have been wrongfully discriminated against," Jones vowed. "I condemn the wave of anti-Semitic acts and speech we continue to see in our country and throughout Georgia communities.”
“These horrific acts are unacceptable, and this hatred and hostile way of thinking will not be tolerated. I will prioritize the final passage of Senate Bill 523 by the Senate, and I look forward to Governor Brian Kemp signing this measure into law."
Senate Bill 523
SB 523 will require the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia to establish policies and procedures regarding discrimination complaints.
It would require the Department of Education to designate a state-wide K-12 Title VI Coordinator. This coordinator will be tasked with managing the accountability process for elementary and secondary schools.
To ensure ongoing oversight, the bill will require annual reports containing aggregate data on complaints, investigations, and enforcement actions.
The report on K-12 will be due by June 30 each year to the Governor, Lt. Governor, and relevant legislative chairs. The report on higher education will be due by July 1 each year to the same parties.
