Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) recently announced new water infrastructure upgrades heading to Georgia after securing funding packages and approval for the City of Columbus and Lee County.
Columbus
The upgrades for Columbus were secured after the passage of the Georgia Stormwater Management Act. The bill created a new authority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct water infrastructure projects across the Columbus area.
Alongside the new authority, Sen. Ossoff is delivering $3,120,000 for upcoming projects through bipartisan legislation that became law on January 23, 2026. Specifically, Columbus can expect upgrades to the South Columbus Water Resources facility, which serves the City of Columbus and Fort Benning.
The Senator commented on this development, stating that every town in the state deserves this kind of treatment.
“Every town in Georgia deserves safe, effective water infrastructure,” Sen. Ossoff said. “That’s why I bought Republicans and Democrats together to upgrade water infrastructure in Columbus.”
Lee County
Lee County can expect to receive similar treatment with new funding designated for installing new technology in the effort to improve water quality. This upgrade will also allow Lee County to have a centralized source of drinking water rather than relying on several small, private wells.
Working alongside Representative Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), the Senator is also delivering $1,092,000 for the project through bipartisan government funding legislation that became law on January 23, 2026.
In a statement, Sen. Ossoff reiterated his stance that every town in Georgia deserves this treatment.
“Every town in Georgia deserves safe, effective water infrastructure,” said Sen. Ossoff. “That’s why I bought Republicans and Democrats together to upgrade drinking water infrastructure in Lee County.”
Lee County Manager Scott Addison thanked the Senator for his assistance and discussed the benefit of this new upgrade.
Addison stated, “This funding will be utilized to construct a 1.0 million gallon per day groundwater production well and treatment facility that will provide safe drinking water for the citizens of Lee County.”
