Attorney General Chris Carr has recently issued a statement on the State of Georgia’s case against 61 individuals, who are alleged to have conspired together to block the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.

This event occurred in 2023 when 61 people were charged with domestic terrorism and organized criminal activity in relation to the “Stop Cop City” movement. This movement rose in response to the construction of the training center and environmental concerns.

For context, the construction of the training center was set to take place in the South River Forest and involve limited deforestation. Activists also objected to the training center on the grounds of police militarization and racial injustice.

Put simply, activists feared this training center would better equip police to uphold an unjust legal system. This resulted in rioting and the destruction of both private and public property.

According to Carr, however, an activist in the Fulton County Court has wrongly dismissed a portion of the case against the defendants. He also claims that the Court has misinterpreted the Constitution and Georgia State Law as they pertain to this case.

The Attorney General then confirmed that his team would appeal this decision to the highest court and continue to prosecute their case. To Carr, the case against these individuals is evident and widely known to anyone paying attention.

“Georgians have seen the videos of violence that took place, the shooting of police officers, attacks on law enforcement, riots in our streets, firebombing of government buildings, and more than $50 million in damages to private property,” Carr stated. “We are not Seattle. We are not Portland. We are not New York. In Georgia, that is Domestic Terrorism, and we do not look the other way.”
