Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) recently visited Goodr Community Market in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood, accusing the Trump Administration of cutting SNAP access to gain leverage in shutdown negotiations.

The Senator met with Jasmine Crowe-Houston, the owner, to discuss the impact that confusion over SNAP funding is having on her small business and on community members relying on this critical aid.

The Senator highlighted the human costs of public policies that lawmakers in Washington often create and how the government shutdown serves as a potent reminder.

Warnock remarked on the media and how they often miss the point of the political process, explaining that “too often, the media wants to know who’s winning, Democrats or Republicans, who’s up and who’s down." "I can tell you that the people who live in this neighborhood, who sit in the pews of my church, aren’t thinking about the politicians. They’re thinking about their families.”

For the Georgia Democrat, what’s really at stake for 1.2 million Georgians is the cost of healthcare, and the fact that premiums are set to increase across the board. This, he emphasized, is unacceptable.

He shared his distaste for government shutdowns, the furlough of federal workers, and the fact that SNAP recipients have been dragged into this conflict. For all of this, he blamed the Trump Administration.

“[SNAP Recipients] were dragged into this fight by the administration... They are literally pitting sick people against hungry people," Warnock expressed. "I can’t think of anything more craven than that, and it shows that the politicians are centering themselves rather than the concerns of ordinary people.”

Warnock vowed to continue his fight to protect SNAP recipients and keep healthcare affordable, expressing his gratitude for people like Jasmine who continue to serve their community in creative ways.
