Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has announced that she will introduce a bill eliminating the H-1B work visa program. Greene states that this is part of her ‘America First and America Only’ agenda to prioritize Americans and their opportunities in the U.S.

She made the announcement on social media, posting a statement and a video discussing the nature of the bill. Greene claims that the H-1B program aggressively replaces American workers and has been abused by the tech and medical industries.

The bill only makes one exception for the program, and that’s for highly specialized medical professionals. This exception is not expect to last, however, and will phase out over the course of ten years.

The bill will also eliminate the prospect of permanent residence and citizenship for visa holders. The point of these restrictions is to ensure that foreign workers are unable to replace American workers permanently.

For example, Greene highlights how in 2024, 9,000 medical professionals graduated from medical school and were left without a residency placement. In contrast, in 2023, 5,000 foreign-born doctors received residency placement.

The bill has yet to be properly introduced, so its finer details are unknown, and also unknown is the level of support the bill will receive from Greene’s Republican colleagues. As the conversation surrounding the H-1B Visa dominates the news, Greene is not alone in seeking to reform and eliminate the program.

The bill also fits with Greene’s recent trend of critiquing Republicans on the issue, coming after President Donald Trump’s comments during an interview with Fox News Host Laura Ingraham, where he expressed the need for foreign workers. Greene criticized the President, stating that America has all the talent it needs and foreign workers only serve to displace American workers.
