The federal government has officially shut down after the Senate failed to pass an appropriations bill before the deadline on Tuesday, September 30th. The Republican majority was unable to gather enough votes, with the final tally coming out to 55-45. Now, the blame game has erupted between Republicans and Democrats whose narratives could not be more different.

Republicans claim that this is all just political theatre and a Democratic attempt to secure health care for illegal immigrants. In contrast, Democrats claim that this all comes down to the Republicans refusing to fund health care in general.

Georgia congressional Republicans have grown vocal on social media, pinning all the blame on Democrats, such as Senators Chuck Schumer (D) and Jon Ossoff (D).

First, Representative Buddy Carter (R) openly declared that he would be forgoing his pay until an appropriations agreement had been finalized. He called on Ossoff and Senator Raphael Warnock (D) to do the same.

Representative Andrew Clyde (R) called this a ‘Schumer Shutdown,’ and questioned the integrity of Democrats who voted for short-term spending bills under President Biden, but not under President Trump.

Representative Rich McCormick (R) claimed that the Republican proposal was clean and perfectly suitable, contrary to what Democrats have claimed about it.

Finally, Representative Mike Collins (R) pointed out that this is the same continuing resolution that Democrats have already voted for, so there is no reason for them to dissent now. He also claimed that this is an attempt by Schumer to maintain his relevance and ensure that he isn’t replaced anytime soon.
