Representative Buddy Carter is sounding the alarm on the looming government shutdown, warning that "as house Republicans, we did our job."
The House of Representatives passed the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, which proposes funding the federal government for seven weeks by extending the current spending plan. The Senate has two days to pass this bill and get it to President Trump (R).
Republicans are accusing Democrats of obstructing the process, which could lead to government shutdown.
Instead of voting to pass the bill, Senate Democrats pushed a counterproposal that was similar but included a few of their priorities. This failed to pass as well.
The difficulty arises from the fact that the Senate must pass appropriations bills with 60 votes, which makes up a clear majority. Right now, Republicans only have 53 seats, so they need Democratic support to pass the continuing resolution.
Representative Buddy Carter (R) issued a statement, pinning all the blame on Senate Democrats for ‘holding the government hostage’ and specifically naming Senators Chuck Schumer (D) and Jon Ossoff (D).
Carter also claimed that the Continuing Appropriations bill was clean, focusing on essential services like social security and healthcare for veterans. To him, shutting the government down over a bill like this is absurd.
According to the Representative, the counterproposal was also absurd, stating that Democrats “offered a radical wish list that puts illegal immigrants first and hardworking Americans last. So, the question remains: When will Democrats cut the political theater? Sadly, their ‘America Last’ approach is nothing new.”
Carter listed examples of the ‘America Last’ agenda, which he argues that Democrats have worked so hard to enact, like voting for tax hikes and obstructing border enforcement.
He revealed what the counterproposal consisted of, explaining that “Democrats are literally threatening to shut down your government to push free health care for illegals, half a billion dollars to prop up left-wing media, and $1.5 trillion in new partisan spending. That’s more government bloat and less money in your pocket.”
