Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined President Donald Trump for his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and leaders from Europe to discuss a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. In addition to Zelenskyy, President Trump notably hosted President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Kier Starmer, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House.

They discussed potential security guarantees to Ukraine and continuing the movement of weapons and arms. When Sec. Rubio addressed the meeting in an interview with Fox News Host Jesse Waters, he expressed optimism regarding the partnership between the U.S. and European countries.

He was first asked if this counted as a ‘big moment,’ and he confirmed that it certainly did. Rubio called the meeting ‘unprecedented,’ but maintained realistic expectations, citing the war’s complications.

Waters then asked if these European nations were planning to deploy their militaries to cement a peace deal. Rubio responded, “Well, what’s being contemplated – look, any sovereign country in the world has a right to enter into security alliances with other countries.”

He cited America’s relationships with South Korea and Japan as relevant examples and explained that Ukraine has the same right to a security guarantee. He stated, “And we will work with our European allies, and non-European countries by the way, to build such a security guarantee.  We’re working on that right now.  We’ll continue to work on that.”

Waters then asked Rubio if he was present when Trump met with President Vladimir Putin last Friday. He confirmed that he was and went further to reveal that Trump had suggested a meeting between all three Presidents.

Rubio stated, “And then if that goes well, hopefully the next meeting will be a meeting between Presidents Putin, Trump, and Zelenskyy, where we hope to finalize a deal.”

Waters then asked for details about a potential deal between Russia and Ukraine, and what would be negotiated over. Rubio refused to divulge those details and reaffirmed that those are for private settings.

The interview concluded with Rubio discussing Ukraine’s position in these negotiations. He stated, “I think everyone understands that some of the key elements to bringing this about is Ukraine has to feel safe moving forward.  In essence, they have to believe that at the end of this war, they are in a position to never get invaded again.”
