A mass shooting occurred in Minneapolis today at a school known as the Annunciation Catholic School, where two children were killed and 17 others were injured. The shooting unfolded as the children and others gathered to worship in a church, and the shooter proceeded to shoot through the windows and into the pews.ย
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian OโHara reported that the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was identified as a 20-year-old man. He was armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol.
Georgia lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and from the state and federal levels have united to mourn for the victims and pray for the families involved.ย
Governor Brian Kemp (R) expressed his shock and sadness about the incident, calling it a horrendous act of violence. He continued, โAny attack on a place of worship and on innocent children who are there to learn is horrendous, and the victims, students, teachers, their families, and all the first responders are in our prayers.โ
Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R) concurred with Kemp and called for people to pray for the victims and their families. He stated, โOur hearts are heartbroken to hear about the tragic incident this morning at Annunciation Catholic School. Jan and I ask you to join us in prayer for the victims, their families and loved ones.โย
Representative Buddy Carter (R) expressed the same sentiment, but also expressed gratitude for the first responders on the scene. He stated, โOur hearts are with the community during this time of tragedy, and we are grateful for the brave law enforcement officers and first responders on the scene.โย
Representative Nikema Williams (D) described the incident as โheartbreakingโ and also called for people to pray for the victims and their families. She continued, โNowhere in our country should anyoneโespecially children in church and during their first week of schoolโhave to fear for their lives. I am closely monitoring the situation as we learn more. We stand with you, Minnesota.โ
Finally, Senator Raphael Warnock (D) expressed his heartbreak over the incident, also calling for prayers. He then stated that all children deserve to be safe wherever they are, especially in schools and places of worship.
