President Donald Trump recently announced that he would be invoking the D.C Home Rule Act to deploy the National Guard and tackle violent crime in Washington, D.C. Violent crime in the city is abnormally high compared to other metropolitan areas, and the President has taken it upon himself to enforce law and order.

This action has Georgia lawmakers split along party lines, with Democrats strongly opposed to it and Republicans celebrating it. The central disagreement comes down to the President taking control and seizing responsibility.

Democrats see it as authoritarian and dangerous. Republicans see it as necessary and strong.

Starting with the Republicans, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) called the move ‘common-sense,’ and praised the President for delivering on another of his promises.

She commented on the need for the federal action to be taken, and stated, “Crime in our Democrat-run nation’s capital has hit a breaking point. Congressmen carjacked. Young interns murdered. Residents, and visitors from across our country and the world, living in fear. Thank you, President Trump, for restoring law and order in Washington, DC!”

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R) concurred with this sentiment, celebrating Trump’s initiative to ‘make D.C. safe again.’ He stated, “Our nation’s capital has a crime crisis—but that changes now. President Trump is taking action to restore law and order in D.C. so the American people can safely enjoy their capital city.”

Senator Raphael Warnock (D), on the other hand, could not disagree more. He went so far as to call President Trump a ‘false prophet’ for promising to liberate D.C. from violent crime.

He stated, “History is full of leaders who weaponize the military to mask their own political vulnerabilities. Let us not be fooled by false prophets who promise to liberate us. The power is always with the people.”

Rep. Nikema Williams (D) criticized the takeover of D.C. as ‘completely unjustified’ and implied that Trump was a hypocrite for delaying the deployment of the National Guard during the riot of January 6th, 2021.

She commented, “Crime in DC hit a 30-year low just last year. The (Trump) takeover of DC police is completely unjustified. We won’t allow the chaos and confusion in the (Fifth District) or across the country.”
