Lt. Gov. Burt Jones
He is officially running! Shortly after announcing his 2026 gubernatorial candidacy, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R) has promised to continue his efforts to eliminate the state income tax as part of his campaign for Governor in 2026, following the lead of states like Florida and Tennessee.
In an exclusive interview with Dome Politics, Lt. Gov. Jones reiterated his commitment to eliminating the state income tax, but didn’t commit to a stance on property tax when asked about it.
When asked if supported abolishing Georgia's state income tax, Jones reiterated that doing so was something he has been working on for quite some time.
“Florida has not had a state income tax for quite some time. One of my number one priorities is trying to eliminate our state income tax here in GA," said Lt. Gov. Jones. “We’ve been very fortunate in being able to lower it for years as I’ve been Lt. Gov. The goal is zero (state income tax), but we’re gonna do it in a very methodical and conservative manner.”
As of now, the focus is entirely on the income tax. If DeSantis can make headway with his proposals on the property tax, then could we see Jones take a similar approach?
Jones is seen as the favorite to garner the coveted endorsement of President Donald Trump.
