Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) has raised the alarm over concerns that FEMA is unprepared to deal with the upcoming hurricane season, claiming that this is the result of massive cuts by DOGE.
In a new video posted to X, Sen. Warnock discussed the issue. He began by mentioning how the head of FEMA was unaware that the country even undergoes hurricane seasons.
Warnock emphasizes that this issue is especially important for Georgia. Georgia has been hit pretty hard recently, especially by Hurricane Helene.
Warnock claims, “DOGE has hollowed out the agency, and we are woefully and inadequately prepared in terms of staff to respond to these disasters.”
This has motivated him to demand answers and confront the Trump administration once more. Warnock commented, “Leaked internal reports indicate that FEMA is just not ready for hurricane season. We don’t have time to waste on this.”
This initiative from the GA Senator goes back to March 2025, when he led 42 of his colleagues to push back against cuts to disaster recovery programs.
Secretary Scott Turner of the Department of Housing and Development (HUD) proposed massive cuts. The cuts would reduce disaster relief employees by 84%, from 936 to 150.
In the letter from Warnock and the Senators, they wrote, “We urge you to immediately stop any additional cuts to the workforce and contracts involved in disaster recovery oversight, and reinstate any recently terminated probationary staff.”
Warnock is committed to this issue and has posted about it while more controversial things occur. For example, he has yet to weigh in on the recent feud between President Trump and Elon Musk.
Warnock made it a point, however, to reiterate his focus on FEMA. He posted, “Leaked internal documents have revealed that FEMA is not prepared for hurricane season. I am demanding answers because reckless cuts and political games shouldn’t come before the safety of Georgians.”
