Attorney General Chris Carr recently released a statement warning that rioters could be charged with domestic terrorism. The reaction to the warning has been surprisingly calm, with many on X cheering Carr on.
In a previous report, it was discussed how this warning was Carr’s response to the riots in Los Angeles. Protests and demonstrations have spread nationwide to protest ICE raids and deportations.
Carr thought it was important to distinguish Georgia from California by establishing such a hard stance on law and order. He made it clear that anyone found committing violence in the name of policy change could be imprisoned for up to 35 years.
One might expect that this warning would find harsh criticism, but that has yet to manifest. The reaction to it has been quite mixed, and some activists have made it a point to comply.
Luara Judge, an activist with the Indivisible Georgia Coalition, commented on the steps taken to ensure peaceful demonstrations. She stated, “We went and we talked with local officials and law enforcement to make sure that this is a safe and permitted, peaceful rally.”
“But, you know, we went above and beyond to ensure that there is safety and de-escalation,” Judge continued.
On X, Carr’s statement received 1,300 likes and almost 300 reposts. The 86 responses were mixed, but some compared this response to the likes of Florida and Texas.
For example, one commenter suggested that Gov. Kemp should follow the steps taken by Gov. Abbot and Gov. DeSantis. Another commenter disagreed, stating that Texas should follow the responses of Georgia and Florida.
Carr’s statement was highlighted by another user in a video that gained 14,000 likes, 4,600 reposts, and over 290 responses. The user called the statement powerful, praising Carr for his boldness.
The user stated, “This bold stance is what EVERY AG, Governor, Mayor etc. in America should be taking!”
Overall, Carr’s warning has yet to receive much controversy. If the protests in Atlanta, GA escalate, then we could see a stronger reaction.
