House Resolution (HR) 867 is a bill that was recently introduced to the House floor. The bill is also known as the IGO Anti-Boycott Act and was met with pushback by representatives like Marjorie Taylor Greene.
HR 867 proposes new strict punishments for Americans who participate in boycotts of Israel or its settlements. Specifically, protestors would be punished if the boycotts are sponsored or endorsed by international bodies.
The punishments are severe and can be a fine of up to $1 million dollars and prison sentences up to twenty years.ย
Marjorie Taylor Greene took a stand against the bill on X. She expressed how it is her job to protect the right of Americans to boycott whomever they choose.
Greene stated, โIt is my job to defend Americanโs rights to buy or boycott whomever they choose without the government harshly fining them or imprisoning them. โ
Greene also commented on how the bill does nothing to help the country and acts only as a distraction. She continued, โBut what I donโt understand is why we are voting on a bill on behalf of other countries and not the Presidentโs executive orders that are FOR OUR COUNTRY???โย
After significant push back from lawmakers and constituents, the bill was pulled from the voting schedule.ย
Greene took to X to celebrate the development. She expressed how the House must prioritize voting on issues relevant to American interests.
Greene stated, โNow letโs vote on the promises we made the American people, the agenda that gave us the historic victory in November 2024, President Trumpโs EOs, and make DOGE cuts permanent with recessions!!!โย
The Georgia representative was not alone in this endeavor and received support from Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.ย
Massie also committed to voting โnoโ on the bill and lambasted it as a mistake. He stated, โApparently HR 867 has been pulled from the schedule for this week. Thank you for your vocal opposition on this platform. It was a ridiculous bill that our leadership should have never scheduled for a vote.โ
