The House of Representatives passed the big, beautiful bill by a vote of 215-214. All but three Republicans voted for it, while every single Democrat voted against it. Every Republican from Georgia voted for it, while every Democrat voted against it.
Georgia Democrats criticized the bill as cruel and life-threatening. Rep. Andrew Clyde (R) stands out as the only Georgia Republican to criticize it.
First, Rep. Hank Johnson (D) criticized Republicans for passing it in the middle of the night. He also described it as cruel and unpopular.
Johnson commented, “The bill that House Republicans just passed in the dead of night cuts Medicaid and SNAP, taking health care away from nearly 14 million Americans and food assistance away from hungry kids.”
Second, Rep. Lucy McBath (D) posted a video on X explaining why she voted no on the bill.
McBath commented, “House Republicans pushed life-threatening budget cuts through in the middle of the night just to fall in line. They’re taking health care and food away from families.”
Third, Senator Raphael Warnock (D) took a hard stance against the bill on X. When it makes its way to the Senate, he will stand against it.
Warnock stated, “I will be voting NO on the Billionaire Tax Giveaway Bill. And If I weren’t a preacher, I’d tell you what kind of no.”
Finally, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R) criticized the bill for keeping provisions that impact the Second Amendment. He did vote for the bill, but only after lengthy negotiations with GOP leadership.
Clyde managed to remove some provisions, such as the taxation the production and transportation of supressors. However, it does not quite pass his standards.
Clyde commented on X, “Unfortunately, the bill does not eliminate the taxation and registration of SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs. Yet we CANNOT give up. Next, this legislation will move to the Senate, providing opportunities for additional positive changes.”
With the vote in the House being so contested, the bill will likely face more challenges in the Senate. If Republicans can stick to the agenda, it should be able to pass.
