Representatives from the U.S. and China have agreed to a new trade deal that rolls back most tariffs. The U.S. agreed to lower its tariffs on Chinese goods. China agreed to lower its tariffs on American goods. Congressional lawmakers, however, are deeply divided over the deal.
The divide is mostly along party lines, as usual. Republicans applaud the administration for sticking to its agenda. They see it as a win that China relented in the face of U.S. negotiations.
Democrats deride the trade agreement as a failure of negotiations. They frame the trade deal as the U.S. caving to China’s demands.
First, Rep. Rich McCormick (R) reacted to the news on X. He stated, “Great economic news out of the White House. I look forward to reading the specifics tomorrow: promises made, promises kept.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) concurred with this sentiment. She said the trade deal was amazing and would put America first.
Greene stated, “Amazing!! We look forward to seeing the final trade deal details between the U.S. and China.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson also celebrated the deal. He highlighted it as yet another example of Trump fulfilling his campaign promises.
Johnson stated, “This is what happens when American leadership puts American interests FIRST. America will not be ripped off by unfair deals and trillion dollar trade deficits any longer.”
Next, Senator Chuck Schumer (D) derided the deal and claimed that China got the better of Trump.
Schumer stated, “Sadly, it looks like China once again got the better of Trump. Another example of Trump chaos. He has one policy one day, one the next. Who knows what it’ll be tomorrow.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) agreed with Schumer about the administration caving to China’s demands.
Warren commented, “Donald Trump's tariff chaos is shrinking the economy, jeopardizing Americans' savings, and raising prices. And for what? He just caved to Xi Jinping.” After this statement, she called on Congress to step up and reel in the administration’s agenda.
As of now, no Georgia democrats have weighed in on the subject. Most likely, they would agree with their Democratic counterparts.
