President Trump’s recent announcement of reciprocal tariffs has made waves among political figures. These new tariffs apply to a large number of countries and are meant to put America’s economy first. Georgia lawmakers from both sides have commented on this new policy with either support or derision.

To start, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) expressed her support for the tariffs on X. Greene began by showing how many countries charge tariffs at double the rate of Trump’s new tariffs.

She concluded, “Will there be an adjustment? Yes. And then America will no longer be abused and paying for the rest of the world and in the long run we will be prosperous and wealthy again!”

Next, Representative Mike Collins (R) expressed his support on X. Collins commented this was simply a fair policy to implement.

He stated, “This is fair. Whether it’s our military or economy, other countries have taken advantage of the U.S. for far too long. That time is over.”

Third, Representative Andrew Clyde (R) explained how these tariffs benefit America’s manufacturing sector. He expressed how this would correct unfair trade practices.

Clyde stated, “For far too long, the U.S. has been ripped off by countries across the globe with unfair trade practices. Now, we’re finally leveling the playing field. THANK YOU, President Trump, for putting American workers and manufacturing FIRST.”

While Georgia republicans are united in supporting these new tariffs, Georgia democrats have only criticized them. To start, Senator Raphael Warnock (D) expressed his disapproval by labeling the tariffs as reckless. He noted the tariffs on Canada to be particularly problematic.

Warnock stated on X, “I just voted YES on @SenTimKaine's bill that would end the reckless tariffs on our close ally and neighbor Canada. These tariffs are making life more expensive for Georgians and achieve nothing.”

Finally, Representative Hank Johnson (D) also expressed his disapproval on X. He discussed how these tariffs will not help anyone, and Americans will actually end up paying more.

Johnson stated, “Imposing blanket tariffs out of vengeance against our closest allies and trading partners makes no sense. Trump is not lowering costs as he promised. American consumers will be paying more out of their pockets to cover “Trump’s Tyranny Tariffs.” Shameful and stupid.”
