President Donald Trump’s (R) new wave of tariffs has congress divided along party lines. The division has only deepened after a rough few days in the stock market. After a loss of value, the market has begun to rise again after Trump announced that he would lower certain rates.
Congressional members from Georgia and abroad can not seem to agree on the effectiveness of these tariffs. Many of them have taken to X to express their support or criticism.
Representative Mike Collins (R) has commented multiple times on X about how this strategy is actually working. He began stating, “It pays not to be a Panican.” This was in reference to people who panic over the market taking down turns.
Representative Buddy Carter (R) concurred with this sentiment by noting how countries are now willing to negotiate with the U.S.
Carter stated, “(The President’s) tariff strategy is already paying off, and the playing field is being leveled. Countries are coming to the negotiating table, and China has shown the world - once again - that it is the adversary.”
Senator Raphael Warnock (D) expressed criticism for what he describes as reckless policy making. He called for congress to step and interfere with the process.
In Warnock’s official statement, he declared, “Americans are angry and they are rightfully demanding that the President stop the reckless destruction of our economy and reverse his unilateral decision to raise prices.”
Alongside these Georgia representatives, House Speaker Mike Johnson sounded off by declaring the tariff strategy to be in line with the “Art of the Deal.” He noted how this strategy will pay off for Americans in the long run.
Johnson stated, “Behold the “Art of the Deal.” President Trump has created leverage, brought MANY countries to the table, and will deliver for American workers, American manufacturers, and America’s future!”
Senator Bernie Sanders also heavily criticised the tariffs. He derided the policy as hurting the working class and raising taxes for everyone.
Sanders stated, “Trump’s trade chaos is undermining our economy and hurting American families. If Republicans have their way on tariffs and their huge tax bill, most Americans will see their taxes go up, while those on top get a big break. We need a trade policy that puts working people first.”
