Congressional Lawmakers Rally to Mourn the Loss of Pope Francis and Support Christians Worldwide

Pope Francis passed away this morning after a long battle with chronic lung disease. He was 88 at the time of passing after suffering from a bout of double pneumonia. The Pope was known for his humility and concern for the poor.

Congressional lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have united to mourn the loss of Pope Francis. They have expressed their appreciation for the Popeโ€™s style and activity. They have also expressed their support for Christians mourning his loss around the world.ย 

To start, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) expressed his support for those in mourning.ย 

Johnson stated, โ€œToday, our prayers are with all those mourning the passing of Pope Francis. As the leader of the Catholic Church, he impacted the lives of countless people across the globe. May he rest in peace.โ€

Next, Representative Rich McCormick (R) also expressed how sad it was to lose the Pope.ย 

McCormick stated, โ€œI am saddened to hear of Pope Francis's passing. He has gone home to be with the Lord. May he rest in peace. I am praying for the Catholic community around the world during this time of mourning.โ€

Senator Raphael Warnock (D) expressed his admiration for the late Pope as well. In his statement, he cited a Bible verse describing how the Lord welcomes his faithful servants after death.

Warnock continued, โ€œAs a longtime admirer of the Pope and his work to center the poor & marginalized, I was honored to meet him & pray with him last year. I join all those across the world mourning his death and celebrating his remarkable life.โ€

Finally, Senator Chuck Schumer (D) discussed the remarkable character of Pope Francis. He praised him for being compassionate and leaving behind a legacy of hope.ย 

Schumer stated, โ€œPope Francisโ€™s message of hope inspired people around the worldโ€”people of all faiths. His compassion and love for the less fortunate was felt in every corner. His papacy will be remembered as a beacon of light and hope against the darkness.โ€
