Georgia General Assembly Passes Bills Concerning Public Safety and Health 

It was a busy day today at the Capitol as the General Assembly deliberated over a number of different bills. Various subcommittees came together to discuss new bills concerning public safety, health, and human services. 

The Senate Public Safety Committee met today to discuss House Bill (HB) 423 which seeks to set in motion an update for current 911 communications technology. HB 423 doesn’t seek to mandate the update, but instead offers the update as an option. That being said, there is already a waitlist with over a hundred counties opting in to receive it.

Georgia General Assembly Update: Week 8

We’ve officially reached one of the biggest milestones of the legislative session—Crossover Day. This marks the final opportunity for bills to pass out of their original chamber and remain eligible to become law before the session ends. It’s a fast-paced, high-stakes time under the Gold Dome, and this week was no exception. With the session winding down, our focus now shifts to working with the House to finalize these bills.

We’ve passed three significant bills that take proactive steps to keep our students and educators secure. Senate Bill 17 requires all schools to install mobile panic alert systems and provide school mapping data to law enforcement. In an emergency, every second counts. We can prevent tragedies and protect lives by reducing response times and giving first responders better information.

Warnock Aims to Return Withheld Taxes to Coast Guard Veterans — By Dome Politics' Jackson Bakich — Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) introduced the bipartisan Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act to aid Coast Guard veterans. The bill aims to "return improperly withheld taxes back to combat-injured U.S. Coast Guard veterans" and ensure they receive the same treatment as wounded veterans of the other branches.

Trump Coaxes Greenland Voters on Eve of Election By Dome Politics' Mateo Guillamont — President Donald Trump is encouraging the people of Greenland to vote for candidates that will support annexing the island to the US in the upcoming general elections. “As I made clear during my Joint Address to Congress, the United States strongly supports the people of Greenland’s right to determine their own future,” said President Trump.

US Military Targets ISIS Operatives In Conjunction With Syrian Militants — By Dome Politics' Mateo Guillamont — US Central Command (CENTCOM) is reporting the recent capture of ISIS-K leadership as a result of a joint mission between US forces and armed Syrian groups. CENTCOM claimed its forces had cooperated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of armed Kurdish groups, to capture Salah Mohammad Al-Abdullah, an ISIS cell leader, in the vicinity of Shahil, Syria.

It was voted on by the House of Representatives with a 224-198 vote.

Tillery's Debanking Bill Fails Despite Conservative Support — By Dome Politics' Jackson Bakich — State Senator Blake Tillery's "Debanking" bill has failed in Georgia's upper chamber despite some significant conservative consideration. Debanking is a practice in which banks choose not to offer services to a potential or current customer if they can be deemed "high risk."

Trump Creates First-Ever Bitcoin and Crypto Reserves By Dome Politics' Mateo Guillamont — President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order creating the US’ first ever Bitcoin and Crypto reserve. The executive order creates two separate reserves, one Bitcoin reserve and another Digital Assets reserve holding a gauntlet of cryptocurrencies, that will hold assets forfeited as part of criminal or civil asset forfeiture proceedings.

Kemp Signs Amended Fiscal Budget into Effect By Dome Politics' Jackson Bakich — Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) has signed the Amended Fiscal Year 2025 (AFY25) Budget into effect. He made remarks following his signature hitting the paper. Gov. Kemp mentioned that compared to other states, Georgia is experiencing financial prosperity while diminishing taxes for its residents, while other states are facing debt and higher taxes.
