State Sen. Tillery's Debanking Bill Fails Despite Conservative Support

Share

State Senator Blake Tillery's "Debanking" bill has failed in Georgia's upper chamber despite some significant conservative consideration. Debanking is a practice in which banks choose not to offer services to a potential or current customer if they can be deemed "high risk."

For example, bank accounts were closed in Canada after vaccine mandate protests which caused major blowback.

Chairman of the Republican Party Josh McKoon and Turning Point Action shared their support for State Sen. Tillery's bill aiming to protect consumers from potential debanking.

The final tally was 13-43.

Chairman McKoon mentioned that this bill stands as a roadblock to big banks looking to "silence" conservatives.

"Attention, Georgia Republicans! It's time to stand up for our rights!" said Chairman McKoon. "Senate Bill 57 is a crucial piece of legislation that empowers you to hold banks accountable for discrimination. We cannot allow big banks to silence us or discriminate against our values. I urge each of you to call your State Senators today and voice your support for Senate Bill 57. Let them know that we demand fairness and transparency in our banking system. Together, we can ensure our voices are heard!"

Moreover, Turning Point urged Georgia residents to call on their elected officials to vote yes on the bill.

"GEORGIA KEY VOTE ALERT," the social media post began. "SB 57: SENATE FLOOR VOTE TODAY! No one should lose essential services over their beliefs! SB 57 protects access to banking & utilities for ALL Georgians. URGE YOUR STATE SENATORS TO VOTE YES!"

In January, the U.S. House Oversight Committee, led by Representative James Comer (R-KY), launched an investigation into the debanking of First Lady Melania Trump.

State Sen. Tillery held up Melania's book on the floor of the Senate, using it as an example of how anyone can be debanked.

"FLOTUS's book is proof that debanking is real & happening. No American should lose access to essential services for exercising their Constitutional rights. This is an issue of fairness & freedom. While my bill didn’t pass this time, I won’t stop fighting for you!" said Tillery.
