Georgia General Assembly: Week in Review
- Sen. Brian Strickland (R–McDonough)
Senate Republicans led the charge in passing Senate Bill (SB) 1, authored by Sen. Greg Dolezal (R–Cumming), on the Senate floor this week. Also known as the “Fair and Safe Athletic Opportunities Act,” this commonsense bill ensures that biological males cannot participate in women’s sports at the middle school, high school, or collegiate levels. As a parent and someone who believes in preserving fairness in athletics, I proudly supported this legislation.
- Sen. John Albers (R–Roswell)
I was proud to see my bill, SB 7, move forward in the Senate Committee on Public Safety earlier this week. If passed, SB 7 would allow sheriffs to utilize municipal detention facilities or jails when space is available.
- Sen. Rick Williams (R–Milledgeville)
During his State of the State address, Governor Brian P. Kemp outlined his top priority for this session: tort reform. Too often, small businesses get dragged down by frivolous lawsuits, and it’s time we put an end to jackpot justice in Georgia. I’m proud to report that two bills aimed at doing just that—Senate Bill 68 and Senate Bill 69—have already been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
- Sen. Drew Echols (R–Gainesville)
I also have bills beginning their legislative journey. SB 76, referred to the Senate Committee on Public Safety, would create a specialty license plate benefiting the Georgia Veterans Service Foundation. This nonprofit directs funds to organizations that support veterans across our state. By purchasing this specialty plate, Georgians can directly contribute to those who have served our country.
- Sen. Carden Summers (R – Cordele)
I proudly introduced SB 80 this week into the Senate. If passed, SB 80 would revise the definition of "rural hospital organization" as it relates to eligibility to receive tax credits. SB 80 is currently scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. I look forward to its passage in committee and its advancement through the legislative process.
