'Blatantly Unconstitutional': Williams Attacks Trump After Funding Freeze Ends

Representative Nikema Williams (D-GA)
Representative Nikema Williams (D-GA) has released a message on social media following the end of President Donald Trump's (R) federal funding freeze which was instituted last week via an internal memo. The White House faced immediate criticism but attempted to explain the memo's parameters by sharing that "the pause does not apply across-the-board" and excludes "any program that provides direct benefits to Americans."
These programs include SNAP (food stamps), Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare, and student loans. According to NPR, while the federal pause has been rescinded, the Trump administration is still reviewing federal spending.
However, Rep. Williams has declared that "the American people have won" with the White House's announcement.
"Trump's attempted federal funding freeze was - and remains - deeply concerning. This was a blatantly unconstitutional effort to eliminate federal funds and programs working families rely on. Democrats fought back and for now - the American people have won," began Rep. Williams.
The Georgia congresswoman continued, sharing that she received calls from her constituents worried they would receive their government benefits due to the White House's memo.
"In Trump's failed attempt to make illegal cuts, he fell back to a familiar tactic in his playbook: chaos and panic. The Republican rip-off left seniors wondering if they could continue to rely on Meals on Wheels, parents asking if their families would keep SNAP benefits, people across the country anxious about their healthcare, and schools questioning which funds and how much they would lose," said Rep. Williams. "This doesn't even include the numerous organizations performing vital work within our most marginalized communities, who called my office asking how they would be impacted."
Finally, Williams claimed victory on behalf of Democrats of stopping the "Republican rip-off" and protecting government services and benefits for American citizens.
"While we blocked the Republican rip-off this time around, we know these efforts will remain a common target. I will continue to do everything in my power to stop Republican attempts to take vital services away from our communities, especially here in the Fighting Fifth," concluded Williams.
Nikema Williams represents Georgia's "Fighting Fifth" Congressional District. She has held that seat since 2021.
