Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) has declared a State of Emergency in Georgia regarding the winter storm that is sweeping the Southeast. Based on the current projections, the accumulation of snow precipitation will move from the Peach State's southwestern corner through Atlanta and into the Carolinas.
Gov. Kemp's State of Emergency, which runs through January 28, allows the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) to activate the State Operations Center (SOC) and authorize mobilization efforts and resources. Kemp's declaration also allows for the Georgia Department of Defense to provide up to 250 Georgia National Guard troops for preparation, response, and recovery efforts if needed.
The Peach State governor shared that Georgians had already experienced "dangerously low" weather conditions before the arrival of the storm.
"Before the full force of the incoming winter weather arrives, many Georgians are already experiencing dangerously low temperatures ahead of expected freezing precipitation on Tuesday," said Gov. Kemp. "Throughout the weekend, I have been working with our state agencies to ensure we're prepared, and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has been treating roadways since Sunday morning. They, along with our emergency management and public safety teams, will be working throughout this winter storm."
Kemp concluded by calling on Georgians to "make their own preparations" for the upcoming weather.
"As we continue to coordinate with state and local officials throughout the state, I urge everyone to make their own preparations to ensure they and their families can remain safe over the coming days, especially if road conditions prevent travel," said Kemp.
Moreover, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) made some headlines on Monday with an executive order of his own relating to the winter storm that's sweeping across the Southeast.
In the executive order, Gov. DeSantis refers to the Gulf by its new name, the "Gulf of America," after newly inaugurated President Donald Trump (R) renamed it in an executive order of his own, fulfilling a post-election desire that has now become a reality.
